Step One: Individuation - Creating an Awareness of SelfCreating an awareness of self usually happens around the age of 2. The autistic child may not go through this stage, or it may be partially blocked. Davis Autism Approach has a method to help the autistic individual go through this stage of developing self-awareness.

The autistic individual can have a blockage, and so the building blocks that are required to develop full understanding of life concepts such as consequence, cause and effect, time, emotion, motivation etc – are not there and the autistic individual may not fully understand cause and effect, and so may not be able to predict, which is the usual development stage. This means the person with autism, cannot successfully learn from situations nor apply learned information to other similar situations. Often they require set rules to be established, so that they can cope with each and every situation separately, which if course is almost impossible to do. This can result in anxiety or overwhelm and a tendency to want to control their environment and their schedule.
