Autism NSW
Program

Autism NSW treatment for Autism

Based in Sydney, Autism NSW uses the Davis Autism Approach methods and techniques to help the kids or adults with Autism to develop and take control of their lives. The autistic individuals embrace the methods – especially adults with autism or Asperger's. The kids enjoy it too and change so much! It is a non-invasive, non judgmental approach. The autistic person feels supported and appreciated at all times.
Davis Autism Approach and Autism NSW  help those with Autism appreciate their individuality while learning
to understand, and fit in to a world that can be somewhat confusing.

Davis Autism Approach three-part program:

Step One: Individuation  - Creating an Awareness of Self

Creating an awareness of self usually happens around the age of 2. The autistic child may not go through this stage, or it may be partially blocked. Davis Autism Approach has a method to help the autistic individual go through this stage of developing self-awareness.

Step Two: Identity Development - Exploring ‘life’s natural lessons’.

Once self awareness occurs, the autistic person is ready to explore life’s lessons and can go fully through the stage that usually occurs around age 2 to 6.  This part of the program involves creating many concepts from clay, such as consequence, time and sequencing. Each concept is created and then thoroughly explored in the ‘real world’. Usually, these life concepts are learned by an individual when they are young and then incorporated into their behaviour and understanding. This allows the individual to learn from events and situations.

The autistic individual can have a blockage, and so the building blocks that are required to develop full understanding  of life concepts such as consequence, cause and effect, time, emotion, motivation etc –  are not there and the autistic individual may not fully understand cause and effect, and so may not be able to predict, which is the usual development stage. This means the person with autism, cannot successfully learn from situations nor apply learned information to other similar situations. Often they require set rules to be established, so that they can cope with each and every situation separately, which if course is almost impossible to do. This can result in anxiety or overwhelm and a tendency to want to control their environment and their schedule.

There are approximately 30 concepts, which are addressed throughout this stage, starting with ‘change’ and ending with ‘responsibility’. Each concept builds on the next all the way through, motivation, intention and responsibility. The autistic individual develops an understanding of life concepts. He sees that they provide relatively consistent outcomes. The autistic person becomes more confident in predicting outcomes and is more secure in trying new things. This results in an individual that can make informed decisions and participate more fully in life.

Step Three: Social Integration – Relationship Concepts.

Davis Autism Approach culminates with an exploration of social integration concepts. Usually these relationship concepts are undertaken a few weeks after the program has completed, once their behaviour has started to change. These help the individual establish how to react to people, how to establish right and wrong and how to make safe choices. This is all done in a neutral, generic way. This results in an individual that is willing and able to participate more fully in life.
Bets has always loved people with autism. Whilst working the area of ADHD, she came across many high functioning autistics. She finds them, honest, funny, entertaining and entirely without malice.
